Mercy Dance Empire offers engaging dance classes, exciting performance opportunities, and themed camps filled with dance, circus arts, and crafts.
Led by Mrs Mercedes Ross, originally from Kaua‘i, the program is built on over 20 years of experience as a dance teacher, choreographer, professional dancer, circus artist, and former director of Modern Collective Dance Company. Mercedes brings a wealth of knowledge, creativity, and passion to every class.
At Mercy Dance Empire, our mission is to nurture positive youth expression through the performing arts. We strive to inspire the next generation to embody Joy, Empathy, Tenacity, Athleticism, Musicality, and Aloha. With kindness at the center of everything we do, our dance ‘Ohana (family) grows together—helping each dancer become the best version of themselves.

Our upcoming show, “Once Upon a Dance,” will take place on June 13 at 5pm (mark it on your calendars) at the vintage and lush Lihue Parish Hall. This recital will feature fairytale themed dances/ music including; Swan Lake, Coppélia, Les Sylphides, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Snow White, Frozen and other beloved fairytale-themed classics. This show will be less than an hour as it showcases many young dancers.

Class Descriptions:
Mini Ballet (Ages 3-5 ) includes dance props (scarves, wands, coins, hoops, and parachute), stories, music, creative movement, and games/ obstacle courses while learning body coordination for life. Great to increase fine and gross motor skills. By introducing students to the basic shapes, positions, postures and traditions of classical ballet, the Pre-Ballet curriculum enhances both cognitive and physical development at this important time. Implementing fun and creative moments for them to improvise and dance will give them confidence to move gracefully everywhere they go.
Positions 1st-5th, demi plié 1st-5th, tendu, dégagé, passé, elevé, relevé, port de bras, rond de jambe á terre, sous-sus, passé, temps lie, pas de bourrée (back, side, front to 5th and to coupé), saute, échappé, spring pointes, soutenu, balancé, and reverancé/ curtsey. Across the floor with Ballet walk/runs, bourreé, skips, chasse (front and side), and grande jeté (straight leg leap).
Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), full water bottle, leotard, dance dress with leotard bottom/ ballet skirt (no long skirts), fitted shorts or black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Ready to learn.
Ballet (Ages 6-10 ) We will be working on healthy body alignment, strength/flexibility, musicality and memorization of vocabulary and movement sequence. Dancers will progress in technique through barre, center, adagio, waltz, petit allegro, and across the floor exercises. After warming up well regular and safe active stretching will be taught along with the names of muscles, students are expected to stretch at home to make progress.
Steps will include sous-sus, releve, saute, changema, échape jumps, pas de chat, glissade, spring pointes, sissonne, failli, assemble, temps leve, arabesque, bourreé, pique without and with turns, chainé, fouette, pas de bouree, pas du basque, port de bras (arm movements), tombe pas de bourre, saut de chat, and more. We will devote some time in classes to learn of spectacular ballet stories, repertory and music to aid in inspiration.
Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), full water bottle, leotard, optional ballet skirt (no long skirts), fitted shorts or black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Ready to learn.
Intermediate and Advanced Ballet (Ages 10+ ) For advanced level children, intermediate teens and even guest artists looking to continue learning while enjoying the art of Ballet. Creative and captivating themed ballet classes prepared to push athleticism in correct alignment and technique during barre, center, adagio, waltz, petit allegro, and across the floor exercises.
Steps will include changement en tournant, royale, entrechat, grand pas du chat, foutte, cabriole, brise, grand assemble en tournant, precipite, temps de cuisse, emboites, tour jete, promenade in first arabesque, pirouette (en dehors and en dedans) and more. Repertory can include short and simplified variations from Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Paquita, Coopelia, La Esmerelda, and more original choreography by Mercedes Ross.
Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), full water bottle, leotard, optional ballet skirt (no long skirts), fitted shorts or black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Ready to learn.

Drop in Rates are then $20 per class
Monthly Rate is $70
Sibling Discount is 10% off each child
Please pay before class with Cash, Check made to Mercedes Ross or Venmo (Message for info).
Please add your student's name and age, month of tuition, and class with the payment. Mahalo!
Policies:
-No makeup classes are available. Please try to attend each scheduled class.
-Please refrain from watching class, the classroom is more focused.
Friendly Reminders:
-Bring a full water bottle, have hair up before class and wear proper attire!
-Also be sure to sign a waiver at the door.
-Always arrange pick up or drop off beforehand to avoid being late. Thank you!
Holidays:
No Class March 17, 2026 for Spring Break.

Mercedes started dance at the age of 3 on Kauai and at 19 continued her performance education, earning a BA in Dance at The University of Hawaii at Manoa. From childhood Mercedes set a continuous focus in Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Gymnastics, and Musical Theater. With gratitude also danced Hula, Tahitian, Philippine Folk Dance, Salsa, Partnering, and was in a Circus for 96 shows in Santa Cruz.
Professionally danced in Honolulu, NYC, San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Expanding in many dance genres with Iona Contemporary Theater, Tandy Beal and Company, Micha Scott (Garth Fagan technique), Keiko Fujii, Circus of Nations, and more. Serving as the creator and executive director for Modern Collective Dance Company for 6 years, while providing entertainment to the Bay Area events and productions.
After teaching at various studios, schools and theatre groups for 20 years she is confident to share her knowledge and the JOY of movement to Kauai's youth. Mercedes is elated to return home with her husband, five year old son and trick loving dog.
Also taught on Kauai at Aloha Dance, Thrive with Movement. Enjoyed sharing the the joy of Ballet, Tap, and Acrobatics. Missing the community Tiffany built and thankful to have been apart of it.
